Details of Spur Embedder

Foundation that comes away does not fail on the day you fit it: it fails the next morning, when you get to the apiary and the wire is sitting on top.

Manual embedding spur with a wooden handle and a copper wheel, for sinking wire into foundation. No element, no cable and no electricity: it is heated before each batch.

01 · HOW TO HEAT IT

Boiling water beats embers

The safe way is to dip it in very hot water, not to hold it over a flame: water does not go past a hundred degrees and caps the temperature by itself. Over embers it is all too easy to overshoot, and a wheel that is too hot goes through the sheet instead of embedding the wire.

And with no element, it cools as soon as it works: the way it is done here is to keep two or three heating and swap them over. And drain and dry the wheel before each pass — water that drips ends up in the wax.

02 · WHY THE FOUNDATION COMES AWAY

The wire has to end up inside

It is the classic complaint about this tool, and nearly always the same cause: a lukewarm wheel melts the surface but never sinks the wire. As it cools it looks stuck, and with the first heat in the field the sheet lets go.

The wire has to end up embedded in the wax, not resting on it: if you can feel it in relief under your finger, run over it again with the wheel properly hot. And tensioned before you start — a slack wire just moves aside.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY
