01 · WHAT IT IS FOR

A first time is rarely with a production colony

The natural place for this overall is school workshops, guided visits and quiet first inspections alongside an adult. And there is one setting that gets forgotten and is the best of all to begin with: empty hives and observation nuclei.

A child can learn to handle a frame, to move a cover and to move slowly without a colony defending anything. Once that is learned, the suit really starts doing its job.

02 · WHAT IT IS NOT FOR

And the habit that applies to any suit

It is not meant for defensive colonies or a long harvest. Always under the supervision of an adult beekeeper.

And the usual habit, which matters twice as much here: long sleeves and trousers underneath. The fabric protects, but pressed against the skin a sting gets through — and on a child the shoulders and back sit right at cover height when they lean in.

03 · THE VEIL AND THE CLOSURE

Made so they can manage alone

The round veil comes off with a zip and hook-and-loop, so the overall washes separately and the veil is replaced if the mesh gets damaged. The mesh runs all the way round: seeing sideways is what stops a child feeling trapped in the suit.

The front zip and the elastic at wrists, ankles and waist are sized so they can put it on and take it off unaided — half the battle on a visit with twenty children.

04 · THE SIZE

The number is the height, not the age

European children's sizing goes by height in centimetres: the 128 is for a child around 128 cm. These are the garment measurements:
