180 g OF WAX PER CANDLE | Ø 7 × 7 cm SIZE |
No. 8 RECOMMENDED WICK |
Silicone mould for beeswax candles in the shape of a ball with snowflakes, Ø 7 × 7 cm and 180 g of wax.
This is a Christmas-season format: made up in autumn, sold in December, and the snowflake relief comes out of silicone cleanly.
01 · THE WICK
Seven centimetres of diameter need a substantial wick: too fine a one and the flame never melts out to the edge, so the candle hollows down the middle. That is why this mould calls for a no. 8 rather than the wick that suits a cube or a narrow figure.
02 · POURING
Cut the wick longer than the mould, centre it and keep it taut with a stick laid across the top; close the mould with rubber bands. The wax must be fully melted, between 65 and 70 °C — its melting point is 61-65 — and poured slowly. As it cools the wax shrinks by about 10 %: it sinks around the wick, and you top it up with a second pour once the surface has set. When you release it, take the stick out and trim the wick to a centimetre.
03 · FIRST BURN
Seven centimetres of diameter works out at nearly three hours of first burn, at one hour per 2.5 cm. The wax needs that long to melt right out to the edge: put it out sooner and the pool stays narrow, after which the flame sinks down the middle and leaves a wall of unburnt wax. That is tunnelling, and there is no fixing it later.
