25 mm SOLID PINE; STANDARD IS 22 | 8 WIRED FRAMES, 30 MM TOP BAR |
48 × 17 CM: 48 FRAME, 17 HIGH SUPER | 5 kg WITH FRAMES, LINSEED OIL |
Migratory Dadant US half super in 25 mm solid pine, three more than the standard 22 (18): machine-jointed at the four corners, finished with a coat of linseed oil and supplied with eight wired straight frames with a 30 mm top bar, ready for foundation. 48 cm frame and 17 cm high super, the migratory Dadant US size; about 5 kg.
The half super is the part that takes the most punishment: stacked full of honey, strapped down and lifted onto the trailer at every move; three more millimetres of wood are stiffness where the 22 fails.
01 · WHY 25 MM
Thin supers do not fail in the apiary, they fail in transport: hours of vibration, knocks when loading and unloading and straps squeezing stacks of hundreds of kilos. They give two ways, jointed corners that open and walls that bow until the super loses its rectangle and no longer fits the next. With 25 mm there is more wood mass in bending and deeper joints, and more thermal mass to buffer day and night into the bargain. How long it lasts depends on handling; the material helps.
02 · HOW IT IS MADE
Solid pine, neither glued nor plywood, with mechanical joints at the four corners: the joint carries the weight and the screws only close it. The finish is one coat of linseed oil, which feeds the fibre and lets the wood breathe, with no varnish or synthetic paint that could pass into the honey by contact with the frame. Outside it takes another coat of linseed or water-based paint; inside, nothing.
03 · THE FRAMES
Eight wired straight frames are included, with a 30 mm top bar that sits well on trolleys, pallets and vertical loads: only the Dadant US super foundation is missing and off to the season. 48 cm top bar: the usual in Spain; 47 Blatt frames rattle.
04 · WHAT IT GOES WITH
It stacks with the house’s migratory Dadant US and Langstroth hives of that footprint; the matching 25 mm brood box is 3011, with three entrances and a metal-clad roof. The standard, lighter 22 mm version is still 18. To move them full, the super trolley 1300.
