Metal Queen Excluder for Layens Hive 370 × 510 mm

01 · FOR WHICH LAYENS

The one modified with a super, not the horizontal one

A conventional Layens works horizontally and takes no excluder. This one is for anyone who has modified it to super: frames with a rebate in the top bar (half-moon), no side hinges and a body or shallow super on top. The 370 × 510 mm cover that Layens brood chamber without trimming; lay it flat between chamber and super, wires across the frames so the bees go up over the full width.

02 · THE GAP

4.3 mm of light, 1.8 of wire, 3.2 thick

The spacing between wires is 4.3 mm, the standard that lets the worker through and stops queen and drone; the wire is 1.8 mm and the whole is only 3.2 mm thick, with 8.5 mm columns. The thinner it is, the less a loaded forager hesitates to cross it, and the sooner the super fills. Clean cold with a plastic scraper; scrape propolis flat, without bending wires.

03 · THE METAL

Hot-dip galvanised, no rust in the nest

Frame of hot-dip galvanised steel DX51D + Z-E to EN 10346 and electro-galvanised class C9D wire, from EU suppliers. It takes the chamber’s damp, the propolis and the scraper without rusting, and does not warp or go brittle like a plastic excluder, which loses flatness over the years and gets propolised more.
