01 · WHY THE GATE VALVE WILL NOT DO

A gate fills jars; it does not feed a line

The guillotine gate a ripener comes with is a flat shutter that slides up and down. It works well with a jar underneath and with little else: there is nothing for a hose to grip, and it leaves the trail of drips that made drip-free taps a product in their own right.

The butterfly changes both. It opens and closes with a quarter turn, can be left half open to throttle the flow, and the outlet ends in a barbed tail ready for the hose. From there you can connect a transfer pump, a filter or a bottling machine.

02 · THE TAIL IS Ø40 ON THE OUTSIDE

The hose goes over it, not under it

The barb measures Ø40 mm across its outer face, so the hose to order is Ø40 mm inside diameter. This is the most repeated confusion when buying hose: “40 hose” means the bore, which is what has to slide over the tail.

A hose of Ø38 inside will also go on if you soften the end for a few seconds in hot water — never with a flame. Either way the joint is closed with a clip, which is not included.

03 · DN 40 IS THE HOUSE 1½” LINE

The calibre the workshop is built in

DN 40 and 1½” are the same measurement, and it is the calibre the house honey line is built in: the 40/49 taps, the 40×49 union nuts and the 40 hose supports all speak that language. If your tank comes out at 1½”, this valve belongs to that family.

If the installation is 2”, this is not the part: that calibre takes DN 50 butterflies, which also change the coupling system.

04 · CLEANING: THE DISC STAYS INSIDE

The butterfly lives in the bore

A butterfly valve closes by turning a disc inside the bore itself, so the disc and its seat are still there when the valve is open. With honey it does not get in the way of the flow, but it is where the product settles and crystallises if you leave it.

The routine is short: rinse with hot water as soon as the transfer is over, with the valve half open so the water sweeps both faces of the disc. A minute that saves stripping it down.

Confirm that your tank outlet is 1½” (DN 40). The hose and the hose clip are bought separately.
