01 · THE SIZE

Measure the hole in your tank, not the inches

The range is named in pairs: 33/42 for 1″, 40/49 for 1½″ and 50/60 for 2″. The larger number is the one that has to pass through the hole in the wall: if your hole is 50 mm this one will not go in, yours is the 40/49. For a mouth of around 60 mm, this is the calibre.

And one point that saves a wrong purchase: DIN dairy threads such as DN 50 are a different standard. A matching number does not mean it will screw on.

02 · THE CLOSURE

Guillotine: it cuts the stream dead

The gate drops square across the flow and shears the stream of honey at once, instead of throttling it the way a turn would. That cuts the drip between one jar and the next, and it is what makes this kind of gate win at hand filling. With 2 inches of bore, thick honey comes through without keeping you waiting.

03 · FITTING

Three parts go through the wall, not one

The body goes in from outside and, on the inside, the gasket and the nut clamp against the wall and make the seal. If a fitting weeps around the collar, the culprit is almost always the gasket. Before filling with honey, test with water above the level of the gate.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is plastic: do not tighten it with a spanner, and do not fit it to a tank you are going to heat beyond what the body will take.
