Details of Flat Gasket for 1-1/2" Gate

A flat 1 ½" gasket in food-contact material — the one that seals the tap or valve against the wall of the tank.

It is the one-euro part that decides whether your honey tank drips all season.

01 · COMPATIBILITY

Careful: there are two different 1 ½" gaskets

This is the commonest ordering mistake. This one is the flat mounting gasket: it sits on the outside, between the tap body and the tank wall, and it is what you compress when you tighten the backnut. The other is the internal tap gasket, which lives inside the mechanism and seals the gate or the spindle. To work out which you need, look at where the honey comes from: if it weeps where the tap meets the tank, it is this one; if it drips from the spout with the tap closed, the internal one has failed. Swapping one for the other fixes nothing.

02 · MAINTENANCE

Change it before the season, not during

The gasket flattens with successive tightenings and hardens with the hot water of each wash; there comes a point where it weeps however hard you tighten, and overtightening only distorts the tank wall. It pays to keep a couple spare and change them when you set up the season's tanks, with the vessel empty. Doing it with 100 kg of honey inside is another matter.
