Details of Stainless steel sieve insert for heated honey sump LYSON

Perforated stainless steel tray that does the first filtering of the honey inside the heated settling tank.

Its job is not to filter the honey: it is to protect what comes after. The 3 mm holes hold back cappings, pieces of comb and coarse wax before they reach the fine filter or the transfer pump. It is the first step of the line, and the cheapest one to clean.

01 · WHY 3 MM AND NOT LESS

A pre-filter that closes up too far stops being a pre-filter

The 3 mm perforation is where it needs to be: open enough not to slow the flow of a honey house that really works, and closed enough that the fine filter does not collapse after four buckets. Any tighter and dense honey would sit on top, and the screen would act as a plug instead of a filter.

The sheet is 0.8 mm stainless steel, the same family of material as the rest of the circuit, so it adds no spot that cannot be cleaned.

02 · IT LIFTS OUT IN SECONDS

And that is where the time is won in season

The insert rests on the rim of the tank, in the area where the honey comes in, and lifts out by hand. You tip out the wax, run a hose over it and put it back.

That is what avoids the long stop: changing a collapsed fine filter costs a good deal more than emptying a tray between batches.
