01 · NO DIVIDERS

The jars touch each other

This is a box for grouping, not protective packaging. For selling by hand, for the market stall, for delivery by car or van and for keeping the store tidy by batch, it is all you need. For sending by carrier it is not: on a depot the parcels drop off the belt and are stacked by weight, and glass breaks at the shoulder, which is exactly where one jar strikes the next. If you are shipping honey by carrier, what you need is double-wall board with cell dividers, or each jar wrapped and the gaps filled.

02 · WHICH JAR FITS

The box is cut to the honeycomb jar

The 1 kg honeycomb jar measures 98.40 mm across by 135 mm tall. Four in a row come to 393.6 mm and three to 295.2: exactly the 394 × 294 mm of the box, which is why the load sits snug and does not shift. The plain V720 does not belong here: it is 80.6 mm across and 172 mm tall, so it neither stands up inside the 130 mm of the box nor stays put on the floor of it — it has a box of its own. Measure the jar you are going to put in, not the volume: two 720 ml containers can differ by four centimetres in height.

03 · IN THE STORE

The printed side and the sixteen kilos

In a stack of similar formats, the side printing tells you what is inside without opening the box and before the batch is even labelled. And it is worth doing the arithmetic before you tape it shut: the honeycomb jar weighs 320 g empty, so twelve full jars come to around 16 kg a box. It can be carried, but it is the limit of what moves comfortably in one go and of what a single-wall base takes when held from below: lift it by the bottom, never by the flaps. For carrying by hand at the market, the six-jar box is the one that handles.
