Glass capillary of 100 µl for the HARBO syringe, pack of five: the reservoir where the semen column is collected, measured and stored. To the mark it is 100 µl and the tube takes about 130; with doses of 8 to 12 µl you get eight to twelve queens per load. Fire-polished at both ends so it can be sealed and the dose stored, better at 13 °C. It is not the tip.

Details of 100 µl Capillary Tube for HARBO Syringe (Pack of 5)

100 µl

TO THE MARK; ABOUT 130 OF REAL CAPACITY

8-12 µl

PER QUEEN: EIGHT TO TWELVE QUEENS PER LOAD

5

CAPILLARIES PER PACK, FIRE-POLISHED AT BOTH ENDS

13 °C

FOR STORAGE; NEITHER FRIDGE NOR SUN

Glass capillary of 100 µl for the HARBO syringe, in a pack of five: it is the reservoir where the semen column is collected, measured and stored in instrumental insemination of queens. Twice the capacity of the 50 µl one (2629). Fire-polished at both ends, which is what lets you seal it and store the dose. It is not the tip that enters the queen.

In the HARBO syringe the semen does not travel through the needle: it lives in this glass tube, and the measuring and the storage depend on it.

01 · WHERE IT FITS

Between the micrometer and the tip

The capillary couples to the micrometer through a length of latex tube (3271) and slides inside the syringe’s protective barrel (2214, 2630). The micrometer, calibrated at around 5.29 µl per turn, pushes the column precisely, and each queen receives a standard dose of 8 to 12 µl. Changing capillary or tip (2635) takes seconds, which is useful to clear a mucus plug without losing the semen already collected.

02 · HOW MUCH IT HOLDS

100 to the mark, about 130 in reality

The column reaches the black 100 µl mark; the tube takes around 130 in total and the tip retains another 10 or 15. With doses of 8 to 12 µl you get eight to twelve queens per load without refilling, twice what the 50 gives. Since each drone contributes barely one microlitre, the larger capacity is the logical one when you mix semen from many drones to spread the genetics in a controlled cross.

03 · THE GLASS AND STORAGE

Fire-polished so both sides can be sealed

The glass is inert and transparent: it does not react with the saline diluent and lets you see the column, the air gap isolating it and any bubble, which would give a spongy response at the plunger and ruin the dosing. Being fire-polished at both ends removes the sharp edges that bite the latex and, above all, lets you seal both sides with a silicone plug, a glass bead or petroleum jelly to store the dose: semen keeps good viability for around two weeks at room temperature, better at 13 °C. Neither fridge nor sun.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Five capillaries are supplied; the syringe, the latex and the tips come separately.

✓ FITSAnyone inseminating in batches or working with semen pooled from many drones who wants twice the dose per load.
✕ DOESN’T FITAnyone inseminating the odd queen now and then: the 50 µl one (2629) is plenty.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDThe syringe, the latex tube or the tips.
