Details of 100 µl Capillary Tube for HARBO Syringe (Pack of 5)

Instrumental insemination is the only way to take full control of a queen's mating — fixing traits and working with selected breeder queens — and the whole job hinges on handling a tiny volume of semen without contaminating or losing it. This 100 µl storage capillary is the part of the HARBO system where the semen column is collected, measured, stored and transferred. It is the higher-capacity version of the 50 µl tube: twice the semen per fill, for anyone inseminating in batches or working with pooled semen from many drones.

⚙️ Where it fits in the process

In the HARBO syringe the semen does not travel through the metal needle: it is collected and held in this glass capillary, joined to the micrometer by a short length of flexible latex tubing. The micrometer — calibrated at roughly 5.29 µl per turn — advances the column precisely; each queen receives a standard dose of 8 to 12 µl. The capillary is the working reservoir: it is not the tip that enters the queen.

📐 100 µl to the mark, ~130 µl real capacity

The column runs up to the black 100 µl mark; the capillary holds around 130 µl in total, and the tip retains a further 10-15 µl. Against the 50 µl format you double the semen available per fill: at 8-12 µl per dose you inseminate in the region of 8 to 12 queens before refilling. Since each drone yields barely ~1 µl, the larger capacity is the logical choice when you pool semen from many drones to spread the genetics across a controlled cross.

🔬 Glass, fire-polished at both ends

Glass is inert and transparent: it does not react with the saline diluent and lets you watch the semen column, the air gap that isolates it and any bubble — which would give a «spongy» response on the plunger and ruin dosing. Being fire-polished at both ends removes sharp edges, protects the latex tubing and — key in this format — lets you seal both ends (silicone cap, glass bead or petrolatum) to store the dose: semen keeps good viability for around two weeks at room temperature, better at 13 °C. Do not refrigerate or expose to sunlight.

🧩 Built for the HARBO system

It slides inside the protective glass barrel of the HARBO syringe and joins the insemination tip via latex, so swapping a capillary or a tip takes seconds — handy for clearing a mucus plug without losing the semen already collected. In professional practice it is treated as a consumable: cleaning the inside without compromising sterility is not viable, so it is replaced. Supplied in a pack of 5.

📏 50 µl or 100 µl?

· 50 µl — occasional work or a handful of queens.
· 100 µl (this one) — large batches, pooled semen from many drones and storing or shipping doses: fewer refills and fewer tubes to seal. Same HARBO system, twice the capacity.

⚠ This is not the insemination tip. This capillary stores, measures and doses the semen; it is not the glass tip that enters the queen, which is a separate, shorter part with its own latex connection. If you are after the delivery part, those are the HARBO glass tips.
