01 · WHERE IT FITS

Between the micrometer and the tip, inside the barrel

The capillary slides inside the HARBO syringe’s protective glass barrel and joins by a length of latex tubing to the micrometer on one side and the insemination tip on the other. The micrometer pushes the column precisely, around 5.29 µl per turn on the HARBO syringe, and each queen receives a standard dose of 8 to 12 µl. The capillary is the working reservoir, not the part that enters the queen: that is the HARBO glass tip (2635), shorter and with its own latex.

02 · THE DOSE IN VIEW

50 µl: four to six queens per load

50 µl holds four to six doses before reloading, convenient for occasional inseminations or a few queens. Through the glass you see the semen column, the air gap separating it from the saline and any bubble; a bubble gives a “spongy” plunger and ruins the dosing, so seeing it in time is half the job. For large batches, semen pooled from many drones or shipping doses, the 100 µl one (3270): half the reloads and tubes to seal.

03 · GLASS AND SEALING

Fire-polished to seal and store

Glass is inert with the saline diluent and the semen. The two fire-polished ends do not cut or crack, do not damage the latex and allow sealing at both ends, with a silicone plug, glass bead or petroleum jelly, when a dose is stored: the semen keeps good viability for about two weeks at room temperature, better at 13 °C, no fridge and no sun. It is treated as a consumable: cleaning it inside without compromising sterility is not viable, so it is replaced to avoid contamination between batches.

04 · WHAT IT GOES WITH

HARBO system; tips, latex and solution separately

For the house HARBO syringes (2214, 2630) and compatibles: changing capillary or tip takes seconds. The glass tips (2635), the BSS saline solution (2636) and the tip-cleaning wire (870) come separately; the silicone tube 1.15 (2349) belongs to the Schley syringe, another system.

Five 50 µl capillaries are supplied; tips, latex, solution and syringe come separately.
