Details of Mating nuc 4-Queen Paradise®

It mates on full-depth Langstroth frames. What comes out of here is a nucleus that goes straight into a hive, not a miniature comb that is no use afterwards.

Multiple mating nucleus in EPS polystyrene: an 8-frame Langstroth body split into four two-frame units, with a floor carrying four entrances, a lid and an 8.5-litre feeder. Frames not included.

01 · FULL FRAMES, NOT MINI

That is where the price difference goes

The body's 24 cm height is Langstroth brood-chamber depth, not a super. Once the queen starts laying, that brood frame moves as it is into a production hive.

It is the opposite of a mini mating nuc, where the comb is a format of its own and, once mating is done, fits nowhere. Here nothing that was built gets wasted.

02 · THE FOUR ENTRANCES

The expensive mistake in a four-way

The floor comes with four independent entrances, and that is no finishing detail: in a multiple nucleus, a queen coming back from a flight gets the wrong compartment remarkably easily, and next door they kill her.

That is why the entrances are turned to different sides and marked with different colours or shapes. And why it pays to check that the three dividers seat properly in their grooves: a gap bees can pass through is one queen fewer.

03 · WHY EPS AND NOT WOOD

Two frames cannot keep themselves warm

The body is hardened EPS polystyrene of over 100 kg/m³. In a mating nucleus, insulation is not a luxury: a two-frame unit has very little population to hold a cool night, and in wood the heat goes out through the walls.

It is also light and lasts decades with normal handling. The parts — body, floor and lid — fit together with a 6 mm tongue-and-groove system that keeps them aligned.

04 · UNIFYING AT THE END

The dividers do not just come out

At the end of the season the dividers are removed and the four units become a single 8-frame colony. But first you must leave one queen only: pull the dividers with four inside and they fight, and you lose three.
