01 · THE BOX

Half-lap joints and corner braces, not a butt-nailed box

The corners are half-lapped: each board is rebated to half its thickness and they interlock, so the joint works across a surface and not just through the nail. That is what stops the box opening at the corners after a few migratory moves, which is where cheap nucs give up. Over that go galvanised corner braces, and the 22 mm of pine give rigidity and some insulation.

02 · THE LID

Sheet metal on top, hinges at the back

The lid is timber clad in sheet metal, which is what takes sun and rain without the wood cupping. It is hinged: it swings back and does not end up on the ground while you work — on a nuc, opened many times over a few weeks, that is appreciated more than on a hive.

03 · WOOD OR POLYSTYRENE

Each wins at something different

Polystyrene insulates better and weighs a fraction, which is why it dominates seasonal nucs. Timber takes the handling, the scraping and the flaming without deforming, and ages instead of breaking. If the nuc is to live years in the same spot, or you sell it with the swarm inside, timber pays; if you want lightness for the trailer, look at polystyrene.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It weighs 26 kg with the frames in: bear that in mind for carrying it alone. And like any timber box, give it a coat of outdoor protection before leaving it in the weather.
