PROTEIN IN THE CANDY

1 kg

SINGLE PATTY

A 1 kg candy patty with UltraBee protein supplement built in, to supply protein to the colony when pollen is not enough: late summer, autumn and the start of spring.

The 10 % is the protein of the candy, not of the UltraBee inside it.

01 · WHAT THE 10 % MEANS

It is the patty's protein, not the supplement's

This is the point that causes most confusion, so let us clear it first: the 10 % refers to the protein of the candy — of the patty you give the colony. It is the same convention we use across the protein candies in the catalogue. Any figure you may see on a bag of UltraBee is a different thing: the protein of the pure supplement, before it is mixed into candy, which is why it will always be considerably higher. Comparing the two is comparing the ingredient with the finished dish — if what you want is raw protein to mix yourself, you need the supplement, not this patty.

02 · WHEN IT IS GIVEN

The two windows where pollen does not arrive

There are two moments when a colony needs protein and the field does not always provide it. The first is late summer and autumn, when the winter bees are born: they are the ones that must last months, and for that they build protein reserves in the fat body — born short, the wintering is paid for dearly. The second is late winter and the start of spring, when the queen starts laying again and the brood demands protein before fresh pollen is in. The manufacturer recommends 0.5-1 kg per colony after the harvest, alongside syrup for the carbohydrate stores.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

This reference is the single 1 kg patty; for a large apiary there is a box format, which works out better on price and shipping. Two things worth being clear about: protein candy does not replace syrup — they are different things, protein against carbohydrate — and it does not replace pollen when pollen is coming in; it is for when there is none or not enough. And as with any feeding, it goes on top of the frames, where the colony reaches it without going down, and whatever is not taken is removed before it hardens.
