Fructobee 79 syrup in a 1,200 kg IBC — 79 % dry matter, only 2 % polysaccharides and no crystallisation, for anyone feeding in bulk or making their own feed.

When you buy syrup by the tonne, price per kilo misleads. What decides what you are actually paying for is how much water is in it: two syrups at the same price can feed very differently if one is 79 % dry matter and the other 66 %. That figure is the first thing to look for on a datasheet, and on this one it is at the high end of the market.

🍯 What the «79» means and why it settles the comparison

The 79 is the dry matter: 79 %. In other words only 21 % of the container is water. For context, a typical stimulation syrup sits around 66 % dry matter — a third of what you buy is water. When comparing suppliers, divide by dry matter rather than by gross kilo: it is the only way to know what you are paying for the sugar that actually reaches the colony. It also changes handling: a denser syrup stores better and the colony spends less energy dehydrating it.

🧪 Composition: sugars the bee can actually use

The ratio is 37 % fructose and 32 % glucose, with sucrose and other saccharides making up the profile. The technical figure that matters sits at the other end: only 2 % polysaccharides. Polysaccharides and starches are the bad sign in a bee feed, because the colony cannot digest them and they end up as ballast in the gut; here the product is very nearly assimilable in full. It is made from non-GMO raw materials, of Spanish origin, and it is the same raw material used for human food.

❄️ Not crystallising matters far more at 1,200 kg

In a 12 kg jerrycan, a syrup starting to crystallise is a nuisance. In a 1,200 kg IBC it is a serious problem: the crystallised mass will not come through the tap, it forces you to decrystallise the whole container, and at worst it leaves your feed immobilised in the middle of the season. By its composition this syrup does not crystallise, which is exactly what lets you keep it in store and draw on it through the season.

🏗️ Who the container pays off for, and how it is handled

The IBC makes sense past the colony count where filling jerrycans stops being work and starts being lost time, and also if you make up your own feed: its texture dilutes and blends readily with other raw materials. You will need a way to get it out — bottom tap or transfer pump — and somewhere to put it, because a full container does not get moved by hand. Two limits worth being clear about: syrup provides energy, not protein, so it does not stand in for pollen or a protein supplement if that is what is short; and do not feed over a flow you intend to harvest, because the colony can store it in the combs and it can end up in the honey.
