01 · NARROWER THAN THE FRAME

The measurement that confuses people, explained

The tub is about 44 cm wide and the top bar of a Langstroth or Dadant frame is 48 cm. That is not a problem: it is the design. The frame does not go inside, it sits across the two rims, and that is exactly why the bench has to be narrower than the top bar. Any wider and the frame would drop in.

The same geometry sets the limit: Layens frames do not sit on it, because their top bar is shorter than the width of the tub. They can be rested and uncapped on the frame holder, but they do not fit inside the tub.

A metre of length holds between 20 and 30 uncapped frames depending on the format, so the bench also works as a waiting area next to the extractor: you stop scattering sticky frames around the room.

02 · HOW IT DRAINS

3 mm filter, valve underneath and a draining routine

The cappings sit on a 3 mm perforated sheet and the honey passes to the bottom. The filter rests on that bottom, not raised, and it is worth knowing: if you let the honey rise until it covers the sheet, the cappings stop draining. Drained regularly, they reach the press or the wax melter almost dry.

Emptying is through a nylon DN40 guillotine gate valve, and it sits underneath, not on the front. Allow for that when you set it up: you need clearance below the bench for the bucket or the settling tank, or the valve is no use to you.

03 · CLEANING

Wax does not come off with soap

It is the question that comes up most after the first season, and the answer is trade knowledge: wax does not dissolve in water or in detergent. Scrubbing with warm water and soap only spreads it. There are two ways, and both work on stainless steel: very hot water, which softens it and carries it away, or letting it set completely and lifting it cold with a plastic scraper, when it comes away in sheets.

The bottom is flat and free of corners for exactly that reason. And the steel lid closes the whole thing between sessions, keeping dust and wasps out.
