Uncapping roller with plastic spikes designed for easy extraction of dense honey. Perforates cappings without removing them, improving honey flow during centrifugation. Lightweight, durable, and easy to use.
Uncapping roller with PP plastic spikes, 80 mm across and 140 mm of working width, to pierce the cappings without taking them off.
Piercing is not uncapping, and the difference is kilos of wax. The roller opens the cell and leaves the capping in place: the honey comes out, but that wax stays on the frame.
01 · THE TRADE-OFF
With a knife or a fork you take the capping layer, which is the cleanest wax in the hive and over a season adds up to kilos. With the roller you do not collect it: you pierce it and it stays where it is.
In exchange the frame comes back almost intact and the bees rebuild far less. If your wax is worth more than your time, the roller is not your tool; if what you want is to get the frame through and give it back fast, it is.
02 · HONEYS THAT RESIST
These are the honeys this tool exists for: dense, with hard cappings and poor yield in the extractor. Piercing the cap gives them a way out without wrecking the comb.
With Calluna heather it is worth being precise, because it has a quirk: it is thixotropic, a gel at rest that only flows once agitated. Piercing the capping helps it out, but what breaks the gel is stirring the honey inside the cell, and there are specific needle tools for that.
03 · HOW TO WORK IT
Roll with just enough pressure to pierce, not to crush: the flexible PP spikes are kinder to the comb than metal ones, but they bend if you force them.
It works well on well-drawn, flat combs. On bulging or uneven ones the roller skips cells in the hollows and bites too deep on the bulges.
04 · AFTERWARDS
It is plastic, so hot water and soap is all it takes. What gets difficult is honey left to crystallise between the spikes: clean it at the end of the day, not the next morning.
05 · BEFORE YOU BUY
It is a tool for difficult honeys, not a general substitute for the knife.
