Petroleum Jelly 5kg

When you’re running several apiaries and doing regular varroa counts, stringy petroleum jelly stops being “just another tub” and turns into a key consumable. Every monitoring board, every trap and every stand uses product, which is why the 5 kg size makes sense for serious operations.

This is a high-density, very sticky and stable stringy jelly, formulated to stay in place for weeks without running or pooling, even if the hive is slightly tilted or goes through moderate temperature swings. In practice, what falls stays exactly where it lands.

Its main job is still reliable varroa monitoring. Spread as a thin layer on the tray of a screened bottom board, it locks mites in at the precise impact point. That gives you consistent daily or weekly counts and, if you grid the tray, a clear picture of how infestation is distributed across the brood nest.

For pest control, the large format gives you enough material to cover multiple yards comfortably:

• Traps for Aethina tumida: applied to trays or chambers of Beetleblaster-type traps, it holds small hive beetles that fall in or hide along ridges and slots.

• Ant barrier: brushed onto the legs of hive stands and benches, it forms a sticky, long-lasting ring; because it’s denser than liquid jelly, it stays effective for weeks without dripping, which is very useful in areas with heavy Argentine ant pressure.

• Asian hornet traps: on some selective trap designs it’s used around access points to make escape harder for Vespa velutina once they’re inside.

It also works well for equipment care:

• Threads, closures and taps: a thin film on metal threads, lid catches and ripener taps helps prevent rust and propolis “welding” parts together, so disassembly for cleaning is much easier.

• Smoker gaskets: on rubber or leather bellows seals it improves the seal and extends their working life.

• Temporary sealing: handy for closing small cracks or gaps in hive boxes while you wait for a proper repair; bees generally don’t cover it with propolis, so you can come back later without chiselling.

The 5 kg tub is aimed at professional beekeepers, co-ops and associations running many monitoring boards and traps at once. You can decant into smaller working pots and keep the whole season on a single consistent batch.

For beekeeping use only as a physical barrier and capture medium. Not intended for consumption or internal applications. Always apply in thin, even layers with a spatula, brush or gloved hand, depending on how you’re using it.
