Details of Candle Mould – Shepherd

Shepherd nativity mould: a standing figure, robe folds, and the neck as its weak point.

A vertical figure fills the mould differently. As the level rises, the wax pushes sideways and looks for the cut. That is why this mould wants strong rubber bands and not whatever is to hand: on a piece lying down a leak is a trickle, on a standing one it is half an empty mould.

01 · THE NECK IS THE WEAK POINT

Open the mould, do not pull the head

On an elongated figure the whole weight hangs from the neck when you pull from above, and that is where it snaps. The correct release is to open the mould sideways, the way you peel a banana, until the shoulders are free, then push from below.

And with the piece completely cold. Warm, the wax still gives and the head stays inside.

02 · STANDING UP, WITH FOLDS

The drape of the robe traps air

The folds of the clothing are what give the figure its character and also where the bubbles hide. Pour slowly and tap the base of the mould steadily as it fills, so the air rises before the wax sets.

Beeswax pours between 70 and 75 °C — it melts at 62-65 and darkens above 85 — fluid enough to reach into the drape without leaving flow lines.

03 · 30 G OF WAX AND NO WICK

The figures LYSON gives

According to the LYSON catalogue, the shepherd is 9 cm tall and 4.5 wide and takes about 30 g of wax, so a kilo makes about 33 figures. For a full scene, adding up the grams of each figure gives the wax for the batch.

LYSON assigns it no wick: it lists it as a nativity figure, not as a candle.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

✓ A GOOD FIT	Beeswax at 70-75 °C, plaster or resin. Strong rubber bands for the side cut.
⚠ STRONG BANDS SEPARATE	They do not come with the mould, and on a standing figure they are what keeps the wax from escaping through the cut.
✕ DO NOT PULL THE HEAD	The neck is where it snaps. Open the mould sideways and push from the base.
