Details of Silicone mould - Henry the Hare

Mould of Henry the hare with a side cut: a candle 10 cm tall from about 90 grams of wax.

The side cut is what saves the ears. On a tall, narrow figure — 10 cm by 4.5 across — the weak point is always the ears. The mould opens along one side instead of forcing you to pull on the piece, and that is the difference.

01 · 90 GRAMS AND A SIDE CUT

Eleven candles to the kilo, and unmoulding without force

Each hare takes about 90 g of wax: a kilo gives eleven. The mould is 11 cm tall and 31.5 in circumference, and the candle comes out at 10 cm by 4.5 across, with a 3 × 11 wick.

The cut opens to set the wick centred and straight before pouring, and opens again to take the piece out. On a figure with long ears, opening the mould instead of pulling is what decides whether it comes out whole. Before pouring, the cut is closed with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.

02 · 70-75 °C AND A COMPLETE COOL

The two numbers you do not skip

Beeswax melts between 62 and 65 °C, so the 65 the maker's sheet gave is the edge. The working point is 70-75 °C, always below the 85 above which it darkens.

And the second number is not a temperature, it is a wait: the piece has to be completely cold before opening the cut. On a narrow, tall figure, unmoulding warm bends it or takes an ear off.
