Silicone mould of the mouse with a present: 39 grams of wax a candle, about 26 candles to the kilo.

It is a narrow, tall figure, and that governs everything. The candle comes out 3.7 cm across and 8.5 tall. On a piece like this the detail lives in the fine parts — the parcel, the ears — and all the handling is about getting them out whole.

01 · 39 GRAMS AND A 3 × 8 WICK

Little wax for a seasonal figure

At 39 grams a piece, a kilo gives about 26 candles. That is the sum you use to decide how many to make for Christmas without committing the year's wax.

The wick it asks for is the 3 × 8. At 3.7 cm across, a bigger one gives a flame that overflows and eats the figure from one side before its time.

02 · THE MOULD 10.5; THE CANDLE 8.5

Two centimetres of working edge

The mould is 10.5 cm tall and 6.3 across — 19.5 in circumference — and the candle comes out at 8.5. Those two centimetres are the filling margin: you do not pour to the top.

The wax is melted and poured between 70 and 75 °C — it melts at 62-65 and darkens above 85 — slowly, with the wick centred from the base and held above. The mould is not moved until the piece is cold; then it comes out carefully and the base is trued. The mould has a slit: before pouring, close it with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.
