01 · THE LID IS CHOSEN BY THE FINISH

TO 77 is not the diameter of the jar

TO 77 is the measurement of the neck finish, not of the jar body or its capacity. Two jars of the same volume can carry different closures, and that is exactly where a whole batch gets lost: the reference that has to match is GPI 2040 with six lugs. If you are buying lids for jars you already own, measure the neck or check the glass reference before ordering — the colour has nothing to do with any of this.

02 · UP TO 100 °C FOR 60 MIN

Surviving the process and sterilising are not the same

The manufacturer's data sheet declares resistance to pasteurisation up to 100 °C for 60 minutes: that is what the lid withstands without the sealing compound or the internal lacquer degrading. It tells you what happens to the lid, not what happens to your product. Validating the whole assembly — food, jar, lid and process — is the packer's job: the time-temperature pairing that makes a preserve safe depends on what is inside, not on the packaging. If you are going to pasteurise, the lid is not the limit; you are the one who sets the process.

03 · THE COMPOUND PULLS A VACUUM ONCE

A new lid per jar for anything you sell

The sealing compound inside deforms against the rim of the glass when you close it hot and moulds itself to that particular jar. As the contents cool, the vacuum pulls the centre panel down and you get the click. Reusing the lid sets an already-moulded compound against a different rim: it may close, it may even feel like it grips, but the guarantee of a tight seal went with the first use. For your own pantry, your call; on a jar that is sold, always a new lid.

FROM THE APIARY

A Twist-Off does not screw on like a bottle cap: the six lugs ride up a short ramp and the whole closure is a quarter turn. Sit it flat until you feel it settle, turn to the stop and leave it there: carrying on does not seal better, it bends the lug and leaves the jar impossible to open. If it grates or feels like the thread has stripped, lift it off and set it down again — there is no thread to strip, a lug has ridden over its ramp.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Each lid weighs about 11.60 g (±5 %) and the full pack comes to around 275 g. And one thing that gets forgotten when choosing a lid: the other half of the seal is the glass. A jar with a chipped rim, a burr or simply a dirty one will not seal however new the lid is — check the neck before filling. On arrival, also check that the compound and the lid rim arrive intact: a lid dented on the skirt no longer bears on the whole circumference.
