10 Frames Dadant US beehive (composed of brood box and super) by Paradise Honey Finland made of expanded polystyrene. They stand out for their thermal insulation, resistance and lightness. Comes unassembled. Frames not included.
The first time you lift a BeeBox in January you feel the difference without opening it: the roof is mild to the touch and the polystyrene is not sweating. This complete Dadant US hive — brood box and half super, frames included — is made in high-density expanded polystyrene by the Finnish firm Paradise Honey, and the whole point of it is that the bees spend on brood the energy a timber hive makes them spend on heating.
The polystyrene is extra-hardened and Paradise Honey declares it food grade, at a density above 100 kg/m³. What matters about that figure is not the number but its consequence: the insulation is uniform across the whole box, without the joints and corners through which a hive built up from boards loses heat. In winter the cluster does not have to draw in as tightly, and at the height of August the inside does not turn into an oven.
A complete timber hive runs to about 15 kg empty; this one weighs 5. With twenty hives on the trailer that is two hundred kilos less tare, and above all it is a back that survives migratory beekeeping. For anyone who moves the apiary two or three times a year, that difference pays for itself.
It is the Dadant US format — 48 cm top bar, the one commonly used in Spain — with 10 frames in the brood box. It works with any Dadant US kit you already own: frames, supers and queen excluders. It does not take Dadant Blatt frames of 47 cm, which is the French measure.
Polystyrene does not rot or warp, but it is soft: a hive tool driven in carelessly leaves a mark. It is worth painting the outside — it shields the material from sun and lengthens its life — and inspecting it like any other hive. Where wax moth pressure is high, keep an eye on stored boxes, exactly as you would with timber ones.

Data sheet

The original option for this system is the Paradise Honey queen excluder, product code 21, measuring 420 × 506 × 2 mm. It is designed for Paradise Langstroth and Dadant hives and sits between the brood box and honey super without interfering with the box interlock. Do not choose an excluder merely because it is labelled ‘Dadant’: check these dimensions, as Dadant US and Dadant Blatt formats are not interchangeable.
