SCALE DIVISION

ATAGO HHR-2N optical refractometer for directly reading honey water content, with a thermometer and manual temperature correction.

Its 12–30 % scale lets you check samples before harvesting and packing. It uses ambient light and needs no batteries. This model suits beekeepers who prefer optical readings and a manual temperature-correction routine, which is distinct from the automatic ATC available on other models.

01 · READING

Water-content divisions of 0.1 %

Place a homogeneous sample on the prism, close the plate and look through the eyepiece in good light. Focus and read the light/dark boundary. The scale directly displays honey water content from 12 to 30%, in 0.1-point divisions.

02 · TEMPERATURE

Read and apply the correction

Let honey and instrument reach the same temperature. Read the thermometer and apply the correction on the built-in scale; record the initial reading, temperature and corrected result. Temperature correction on this model is manual. The IHC water/refractive-index table is referenced to 20 °C.

03 · CALIBRATION

Use the ATAGO-specified standard

ATAGO lists standard liquid LK RE-99010, approximately 73 °Brix at 20 °C, as an accessory for the HHR-2N. Use the standard’s specified value and procedure when adjusting this refractometer. Distilled water, equivalent to 0 °Brix, falls outside its measuring range.

04 · BEFORE BUYING

A manual routine for representative samples

Use a homogeneous, crystal-free sample. When honey separates, the liquid phase becomes enriched in water: measuring only that layer overestimates the whole sample’s moisture. Homogenise a representative test portion and let it reach the instrument’s temperature before repeating the reading. As a practical storage target, aim for moisture below 18%. In Spain, Royal Decree 1049/2003 sets a general maximum of 20%, or 23% for heather honey from Calluna; baker’s honey has separate limits.
