SECOND SCALE

The ATAGO MASTER-HONEY/BX combines a honey water-content scale with a Brix scale and automatic temperature compensation.

This handheld optical refractometer checks samples during harvesting and packing. Its two scales display honey moisture or Brix directly from the same optical measurement.

01 · READING

Water and Brix in one field of view

The water scale covers 12–30% and Brix 58–90; both have 0.2 divisions and stated accuracy of ±0.2%. Spread the sample on the prism, close without bubbles, point towards the light and focus the eyepiece. Read water on its dedicated scale; Brix expresses the refractometric sucrose equivalent.

02 · SAMPLE AND TEMPERATURE

A stable reading starts before the prism

Use a homogeneous, crystal-free sample. When honey separates, the liquid phase becomes enriched in water: measuring only that layer overestimates the whole sample’s moisture. Homogenise a representative test portion and let it reach the instrument’s temperature before repeating the reading.

03 · VERIFICATION

A standard within the measuring range

ATAGO specifies its 60.00 °Brix sucrose standard RE-110060 for this model. For a rough check, dissolve 60.0 g of white sugar in 40.0 g of water, weighed with 0.1 g resolution, and keep the solution in a closed jar to prevent evaporation. Let sample and instrument equilibrate at 20 °C. Use a certified standard for fine adjustment; the homemade mixture is a field check.

04 · BEFORE BUYING

Two scales and automatic correction

The instrument weighs 90 g and comes with a case; the verification standard is not included. Clean the prism with a soft damp cloth and record readings by batch. As a practical storage target, aim for moisture below 18%. In Spain, Royal Decree 1049/2003 sets a general maximum of 20%, or 23% for heather honey from Calluna; baker’s honey has separate limits.
