01 · TANGENTIAL AND REVERSIBLE

What it gains and costs against a radial

In a tangential the comb faces the force square on, and that is why it empties each side more thoroughly — you notice it above all with thick honey or honey starting to granulate. A radial is gentler and does both sides at once, but leaves more honey in the cell.

The price of a tangential has always been having to turn the frames by hand. That is exactly what the reversible cage solves: reverse the direction and the second side is presented without opening or touching anything.

02 · WHICH FRAMES IT TAKES

Six brood or twelve shallow

The reinforced cage — 5.2 mm flat bars and 20 × 20 mm mesh — accepts four formats, which is what earns it the word universal:

At twelve shallow frames a load, an extraction day for a beekeeper with fifty or sixty colonies gets done without stress.

03 · THE FORGOTTEN DIMENSION

Forty-six centimetres to the floor

The valve sits between 460 and 500 mm off the floor depending on how the legs are set, and that is the number that decides whether your bucket fits underneath or you end up tilting the extractor on a brick.

The drum measures Ø 900 × 800 mm and total height runs from 1,350 to 1,390 mm. The outlet is a Ø 50 mm stainless flap valve.

04 · THE ELECTRICS

150 W and a microswitch in the lid

The motor is 150 W at 230 V — the reinforced version, where it used to be 80 W — driven by SAF Natura's SN_ALIM panel with preset automatic programmes. It is not a LYSON P-series controller: it is their own, even though both brands are now in the same group.

The lid is 4 mm methacrylate and carries a microswitch, so opening it while running cuts the motor. As with any rotating machine: wait for the cage to stop completely before reaching in.
