01 · WHERE IT SITS

On a 200 kg settling tank

It is made to the mouth of a 200 kg settling tank — the SAF of that capacity is 525 mm across — so it drops in and stays. The 130 mm skirt is what keeps honey from splashing out while you tip the extractor bucket. Before ordering, measure the mouth of yours: it is the minute that separates a sieve that fits from a sieve that does not.

02 · THE MESH

1.5 mm: honey through, wax held

A 1.5 × 1.5 mm mesh holds the coarse material without slowing the flow, which is exactly what you need when emptying buckets: if the sieve blocks, the work stops. Being a single mesh it does not build up layers of fines. And if one day you want fine filtering, put a nylon strainer on top and you have two stages without buying another piece of kit.

03 · WARM, AND NO KNOCKING

Two habits that keep it alive

With honeys that granulate quickly — lavender, thyme — pour it warm, at 35-38 °C: that way the crystals go through the mesh instead of forming a cake on top. And never knock the mesh with the hive tool to clear it: if it blocks, soak it in warm water and the wax comes away by itself. The 0.8 mm stainless takes the acids in honey and rinses clean with hot water.

04 · IT ALSO DOES POLLEN

Sieving before drying

Away from the honey house it has a second use few people make of: sieving fresh pollen before it goes into the drier, to take out the coarse debris that comes up from the drawer. Same sieve, same rinse, and one cleaning step less afterwards.

Check the diameter of your tank's mouth before ordering: this one is 520 mm and is meant for 200 kg tanks.
