Details of Nylon Cloth Filter 500 microns

500 micron nylon filter cloth sold by the linear metre — the middle mesh of the range, for building your own filter to fit the bucket, drum or honey tank you already own.

A ready-made filter comes with a fixed ring and a fixed diameter, and it either fits your container or it does not. Cloth by the metre turns that around: you cut the filtering surface you need and adapt it to the vessel you actually use. Each unit is one linear metre off the roll — a piece measuring 1,000 × 1,270 mm, enough for several small filters or to line a whole honey tank.

📐 Which of the three meshes do I need?

There are three cloth apertures in the range, and it pays to read the name rather than the code, because one of them misleads: TEL1000 is 1,000 µm (coarse, for straining and pre-filters), TEL500 is 500 µm (this one, the intermediate) and TEL200 is 300 µm — yes, 300, not 200 — which is the finishing mesh. There is no 200 micron cloth: if you want «the 300», the code to order is TEL200. 500 µm is the sensible choice for single-pass filtering of reasonably clean honey; if you are working in two stages, the logic is 1,000 µm to strain and 300 µm to finish.

🔧 Cut it oversize and give it support

Cut the piece with enough spare to secure the whole perimeter, and rest it on a basket, ring or solid support. Do not let it hang from the rim of the container alone: the column of honey is heavy, and the fabric distorts or the fixing lets go exactly when the bucket is full. Before you load honey it is worth testing the set-up with water and checking there is no fold where honey could bypass the filter.

🍯 What it holds back — and what it does not

A 500 µm aperture — half a millimetre — retains wax fragments, cappings debris and visible particles from the process. It does not remove chemical residues, it does not sterilise and it will not rescue honey that has fermented or been overheated. One practical caution: the micron rating is the aperture, not the flow rate. Cold, dense or partly crystallised honey will pass slowly however open the mesh is; what helps is more filtering surface and fluid honey, not pushing the temperature up.

🧹 Cleaning and when to replace it

When you finish, take the wax off before it hardens — once cold it grips the weave and costs you twice the work. Wash without anything that could cut the mesh (no wire wool, no scrapers), rinse and dry it completely before storing. Replace the piece once you see tears, distorted areas or smells that survive washing: a torn mesh filters far worse than it looks.
