01 · THE SEATING

Extends from 30 to 40 cm, and that is the measurement that rules

The arms spread to drop onto buckets and settling tanks with a mouth of 30 to 40 cm: that is the figure you need to take, the rim of your own vessel, not the size of the basket. Because it works above the edge it steals no capacity and does not get in the way of the gate, and it lifts off in one movement. Make sure both arms are bearing before you tip: loaded, it weighs.

02 · THE TWO STAGES

One basket, two meshes, one chore

The upper one stops the bulk — cappings, flakes of wax, the odd bee — and the lower one finishes the job. Having them in one piece means you lift the top one, clean it and put it back without dismantling anything or stopping the transfer. Do it before the layer covers the whole mesh: once that happens the honey stops straining and runs off round the rim.

03 · THE MESH SIZE

We are not going to invent what is not declared

You often ask how many microns it has, and the manufacturer does not declare the aperture of these two meshes. What it does is clear enough: it holds back wax, cappings and visible debris, and it is not a finishing strain. If you need to work to a figure, the catalogue has strainers that do declare one, from a 500 micron cone to a double of 1,183 and 830-870.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Work at a moderate flow and do not push the debris through with your hand: forcing it through the mesh undoes the straining you came to do.
