01 · THE MATERIAL

Food-grade polypropylene, free of bisphenol A and phthalates

Honey is slightly acidic and stays months inside the container, so the plastic cannot be just any plastic. NICOT makes it in France in injected polypropylene approved for food contact, recyclable and, according to the maker, free of bisphenol A and phthalates. It is a material that adds neither smell nor taste and that takes honey-room handling better than glass: it does not chip, it does not break if it drops off the counter, and it weighs a fraction, which on an order of three hundred jars shows up in the freight.

02 · THE CAPACITY

370 ml for 500 g, and they are not the same thing

A container is not filled with millilitres, it is filled with honey, and honey weighs around 1.4 kg per litre. Half a kilo therefore takes about 355 ml, not 500. The 370 ml of this jar is exactly that plus the air you need to close it without honey welling over the shoulder. Compare containers by volume without doing that arithmetic and you end up buying short or wasting capacity; and if you fill to the brim, the lid pushes honey out as it seats.

03 · THE CLOSURE

A shouldered press-on lid, with no tab

The white lid comes with every jar and it is not a screw cap: it presses onto the shoulder of the body and seals at the rim. It is worth knowing what it is not: NICOT makes a separate range with a tamper-evident tab, and this is not that one. If your sale requires an opening witness — hospitality, shops, export — you have to ask for the tamper-evident range; for direct sale, markets and gifts, the press-on lid does the job.

04 · HOW TO STORE IT

Upright, always, full ones too

The maker warns of something that costs a mess to learn the hard way: these jars are used and stored standing up. A press-on lid is not leak-proof on its side, and honey, dense as it is, still finds the rim. Stack them upright in the store and on the display, and when moving them use a box that keeps them vertical. Cylindrical and without corners, they sit well in any of the plain cardboard grouping boxes.
