01 · WHICH IS WHICH

The three sizes, with their measurements

The family is three jars of the same design, and by eye they look alike. This is the big one: 750 ml for 1 kg of honey, Ø 115 × 117 mm. The middle one holds 370 ml for half a kilo and measures Ø 88 × 110; the small one, 190 ml for 250 g, Ø 71 × 91. Look at the diameter rather than the height: the 1 kg is nearly three centimetres wider than the half-kilo, and that difference is what decides whether it fits your box, your display or the gap in the window.

02 · THE CAPACITY

750 ml for 1 kg, because honey is not water

Honey weighs around 1.4 kg per litre, so a kilo takes about 715 ml, not a thousand. The 750 ml of this jar is that kilo plus just the air needed to close it without welling over the shoulder. It is the arithmetic to do before comparing containers by volume, and it explains why a jar of 750 is the kilo one. Filling to the brim gains nothing: the lid pushes honey out as it seats and the rim ends up sticky.

03 · MATERIAL AND CLOSURE

Polypropylene from France, press-on lid with no tab

NICOT makes it in France in injected polypropylene approved for food contact, recyclable and, according to the maker, free of bisphenol A and phthalates; it arrives clean and is filled without washing. The white lid is included and is not a screw cap: it presses onto the shoulder. And it is worth knowing what it does not carry: the tamper-evident witness belongs to another range from the maker, the one with a tab. For direct sale and markets this lid does the job; for shops or export with a seal, that range is the one to order.

04 · HOW TO STORE IT

Upright, and mind the stack with the kilo

The maker warns of it: these jars are used and stored standing up. A press-on lid is not leak-proof on its side. With the kilo format there is a second reason, weight: full it is over one kilo four hundred, and a tall column of full jars bears down on the lid of the bottom one, which is the part that seals. Stack them upright and few high, and to move them use a box that keeps them vertical — cylindrical and without corners, they sit well in the plain grouping cartons.
