01 · THE CAPACITY

1,480 cc for 2 kg, and they are not the same

Honey weighs more than water: its density is around 1.42 kg per litre, so two kilos take about 1,400 cc. The 1,480 of this container is that plus the air space you need to close the thread without it welling over. It is the arithmetic worth doing before comparing containers by volume: a container of a litre and a half is not the same as one for two kilos of honey.

02 · THE CAP AND THE HANDLE

A screw cap, and one handle, not two

The yellow cap is a screw cap — the question that reaches this page most often — and it closes well enough to move the container full without dripping. There is one handle, on the body, and you are glad of it with two kilos inside: full it is over 2.4 kg counting the plastic. If you wanted a double grip or a handle on the lid, this is not the format. And however well it closes, carry it upright: a thread is not a laboratory seal.

03 · WHAT IT IS FOR

Bulk, storage and direct sale in quantity

It is the container of the beekeeper who keeps the harvest in manageable amounts, of the one who takes honey to somebody else’s honey room to bottle, and of the customer who buys two kilos at once and does not want eight jars. Being PET it is light, it does not break if dropped and it shows the level and the colour. What it does not take is hot filling: honey goes in cold or lukewarm, never just heated. For the shelf, use glass.
