Catching, marking and caging queens is precision work with both hands busy: every time you stand up to fetch a cage or leave a marking pen in the grass, you lose the thread of the batch. This stool gives you a steady seat 32.7 cm off the ground and a shaded compartment underneath for the queens you have already caged.

01 · ERGONOMICS

Seated at mini mating nuc height

The seat sits 32.7 cm off the ground: the height at which you work face on to a mating nuc standing on the ground, without squatting or bending your back for hours. It rests on two wide board legs, which spread the load better on the soft ground of an apiary than four thin ones. It measures 61.8 cm wide by 23 cm deep.

02 · CAGED QUEENS

A dark compartment out of the sun

Knocks, direct sunlight, excessive heat and cold are the four enemies of a caged queen, and a hive roof in the sun manages most of them at once. Under the seat sits a closed, dark compartment: the hinged flap opens fully to lift cages out, and a slot in that flap lets you drop one in one-handed without opening anything. It is shaded transit for the working day, not storage — return queens to a colony within 8 days caged.

03 · TOOLS TO HAND

Two trays and five holders

The seat is flanked by two open trays with a solid base, for empty shipping cages, the catcher, the marking cage or the brush. Drilled into the inner edge of one of them are five holders that keep marking pens or the grafting tool standing upright. Held vertical and uncapped, the pen cannot roll away and the paint dries before the queen goes back into the nuc.

04 · BUILD

Knot-free pine, handmade, 4 kg

It is handmade in Croatia from pale, knot-free pine, screwed together, with metal hinges on the flap of the queen compartment. It weighs 4 kg and the seat has a cut-out grip slot, so you move it with one hand and your kit in the other. The timber is bare: keep it under cover between sessions, because a season of rain and sun greys it and raises the grain.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It belongs to no closed rearing system: it is not a Nicot, JZBZ, Jenter or CNE7 part, and it is not tied to a hive format — with Dadant Blatt, Langstroth or Layens it works the same, because this is apiary furniture and not a component. It arrives empty: cages, marking pens and the grafting tool are bought separately. The 32.7 cm height is fixed and there is no backrest.
