Details of Universal stainless steel uncapping frame rest · Langstroth · Dadant · Layens · 42 cm

Stainless steel uncapping rest built to take any frame — Langstroth, Dadant or Layens — with a tilt and flat-finish geometry that drops the cappings inside the tank rather than outside.

The frame rest is the most misunderstood part of an uncapping tank. Most of them are rigid, built for a single frame format, and have the wrong tilt — the cappings slide down the frame face and end up on the floor next to the tank, smearing honey across the extracting room. This rest is designed to fix both issues: compatibility with the three standard formats, and a geometry that sends cappings back into the tank.

Universal top-bar hooks — Langstroth, Dadant, Layens

The top hooks are sized to take the top bar of any standard European format: Langstroth (482 mm), Dadant (448 mm) and Layens (300 mm). Hang the frame by one lug, it sits suspended, and you rotate the face you are uncapping towards you. Format change is tool-free — the same rest serves your Langstroth supers at the spring harvest and your Layens deep frames at the late heather pull.

The tilt detail — flat finish at the bottom

This is the technical detail that sets it apart. The frame rests tilted on a flat-profile bottom bar (36.5 × 2 cm) with a short horizontal section at the base. That change of angle acts as a deflector: when you scrape with knife or uncapper, the cappings and honey run down the comb, hit the flat surface and drop inward into the tank instead of flying outward. Without that flat finish — just a continuous slope — a significant share of the cappings would end up on the floor.

Lateral play for different tank widths

The rest sits on its two lower bars across the edges of the tank. With an effective width of 36.5 cm and some lateral play, it fits tanks of different sizes — from 60 cm hobbyist benches to 1 metre uncapping tanks and professional sideliner setups. It is not brand-specific — it works with the tank you already own.

Build a DIY uncapping tray with any bin

Precisely because of that play, this rest is the key part for building your own uncapping tray on a budget. It sits on a food-grade plastic bin, a clean mortar tub, a cut drum or any rectangular container with an opening of at least 40 cm. Rest it on the edges, uncap over it, and the honey and cappings drop inside the container — you just saved the £350 of a small uncapping bench.

All stainless steel construction

Bar and profiles in stainless steel — the only sensible material for warm honey, cappings and high-temperature daily wash-downs. Clean welds, no corners for crystallised honey to collect in, and easy to stow at the end of the extracting season. Food-contact safe.
