Steam wax extractor for around 30 frames, built entirely in stainless steel by the German maker Carl Fritz. The steam is raised in the water tank underneath rather than in the melting tank, and one cycle takes about 40 minutes once it is up to heat.

Details of Steam wax extractor Carl-Fritz

Steam wax melter with the water in a separate tank: around 30 Langstroth frames per 40-minute cycle.

The water sits below and the wax above, and they never meet. The steam is not generated in the melting chamber but in a 19 litre tank underneath, and it rises. The wax melts in that steam and leaves by its own route without ever having been in the water, which is what avoids the milky emulsion hard water produces.

01 · WHY SEPARATING THE WATER MATTERS

The calcium and iron in the water end up in the wax

In a melter where the wax floats on water, the water is both the heat medium and the place the dirt falls into. With hard water that costs you: calcium and iron encourage milky emulsions that then have to be broken by settling or with an acid.

Here the water lives in its own tank, is filled and drained without opening the melting chamber, and the wax only receives steam. It is a design difference you see in the colour and the cleanliness of the block.

02 · THE THERMOSTAT IS NOT DECORATION

From 30 to 110 °C, with a 3000 W element

The element is an immersion tube of 3000 W at 230 V, controlled by a thermostat between 30 and 110 °C. That range lets you work below boiling when the load is delicate, and go higher when what goes in is old combs full of cocoons.

A melting cycle runs around 40 minutes, not counting the initial heat-up, and it varies with the state of the combs: an old frame takes longer than cappings.

03 · THE VESSEL AND THE LID

Ø 63 cm, welded bottom and a locking ring

The inner tank is 63 cm across and its bottom is welded, with no gap for old wax to collect in: that is what makes it genuinely cleanable between seasons. The handles are rigid, which you appreciate on a 35 kg unit when loaded.

The lid has a silicone gasket and a locking ring, and that is what keeps the steam inside working instead of escaping round the rim. Per load it takes around 30 Langstroth frames, 16 Dadant brood frames or 35 half-super frames.

04 · IT MELTS AND CLEANS

And the wax that comes out still needs settling

Worth saying because it gets confused: a steam melter melts the wax and holds the impurities in the basket, but it does not sterilise and it does not remove acaricides. A steriliser is a different machine, with control of time and temperature.

And the block is not finished when it leaves: a long rest, better while hot and around 80 °C, lets the fine dirt sink and leaves the clean wax on top.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

What goes in per load and what has to be added separately.

✓ FITS30 Langstroth frames, 16 Dadant brood frames or 35 half-supers per cycle, in a Ø 63 cm vessel.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDNeither the wax masher nor the collecting vessel: both are sold separately.
✕ IT DOES NOT STERILISEIt melts and cleans; it does not sterilise, does not remove acaricides and does not replace the later settling.
