01 · IT FLOATS BY A 4 % MARGIN

The physics of a floating candle

Beeswax has a density of about 0.96 g/cm³ and water 1.00. It floats, yes, but with very little to spare — considerably less than a paraffin candle, which is lighter.

The geometry follows from that: a wide, low disc. Plenty of spread-out surface and little height is what gives stability when the flotation margin is that narrow. It is not a decorative decision.

02 · SHORT WICK, WATER NOT FULL

The two moves that avoid the mishap

The wick is trimmed short, on the order of 4-5 mm. A long wick makes a tall flame, overheats the wax and unbalances a disc that is already floating on a fine margin.

And the bowl is not filled to the rim: the candle drifts, and if it meets the wall it tilts and can go over. The maker recommends a 3×6 wick for this piece. The mould has a slit: before pouring, close it with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.

03 · HOW MANY COME OUT OF A KILO

The yield sum

The maker gives 10 g of wax a candle. For reference, the full 6 cm by 15 mm disc would come to about 40 g, and a daisy with its petals stays well below that disc.

Count on something between 50 and 100 candles a kilo depending on what yours ends up weighing — weigh the first one and you will have the exact number. Either way, it is one of the moulds that goes furthest.

04 · ON WAX, WITHOUT THE TALES

What holds and what doesn't

You read that beeswax burns in a way that purifies the air. There is no support for that and we do not publish it, here or on any of our moulds.

What is true and enough: it makes little soot compared with paraffin and keeps its own colour and smell. And a floating candle has one real practical advantage — as it burns down it reaches the water and puts itself out.
