Details of Silicone Mould – Duck in Egg (Small)

Silicone mould of the duckling in the egg: 36 grams of wax a candle, about 27 candles to the kilo.

A spring-season mould. It is cheap in wax and quick to make, which is what a seasonal figure is asked for. The wick it needs is a 3 × 7 and it is not included.

01 · 36 GRAMS AND A 3 × 7 WICK

The wick is set by the candle diameter, 3.9 cm

At 36 grams a piece, a kilo of wax gives on the order of 27 candles. That is the reference for planning an Easter run without falling short or melting too much.

The 3 × 7 is a small wick, the one that matches the candle's 3.9 cm diameter. Putting a thicker one in a narrow figure does not make it last longer: it makes a flame that overflows and hollows the piece out on one side.

02 · THE MOULD IS 9.5; THE CANDLE, 6.7

The pour height is not the height of the mould

The mould is 9.5 cm tall and 5.5 across, but the candle comes out at 6.7 cm. Those nearly three centimetres of difference are the working edge: you fill to the mark, not to the top.

The wax is poured between 70 and 75 °C — it melts at 62-65 and darkens above 85 — slowly, so as not to trap bubbles, and the mould is not moved until the piece is completely cold. The mould has a slit: before pouring, close it with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.
