Details of Candle Moulds – Sitting Frog

Silicone mould of the seated frog: 40 grams of wax a candle, about 25 candles to the kilo.

A counter figure that goes a long way. At forty grams a piece, a kilo of wax gives twenty-five candles. It is one of the figures that pays off when you have to fill a market table without melting half the apiary's wax.

01 · 40 GRAMS, 25 CANDLES A KILO

And a 3 × 8 wick for 6 cm of diameter

The mould is 8.5 cm tall; the candle comes out at 6.5 cm of pour height and 6 across. That difference is the working edge: you fill to the mark, not to the rim.

For that section the maker specifies a 3 × 8 wick. On a wide, low figure the wick has to carry the pool of wax out to the wall; if it falls short, the frog hollows out in the middle and keeps its legs intact.

02 · 70-75 °C, NOT 65-70

The ten degrees between thick wax and wax that flows

Beeswax melts between 62 and 65 °C, so pouring at 65 is working on the edge: it arrives only just melted and thick. The comfortable point is 70-75 °C, always below the 85 above which wax darkens.

Pour slowly so as not to trap air, with the wick already centred and held from above, and do not touch the mould until the piece is completely cold. Then trim the wick and true the base. The mould has a slit: before pouring, close it with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY
