Winter sparrow candle mould: a 5.5 cm figure that takes about 42 grams of wax.

A small, solid bird. The mould is 7 cm tall by 6 cm across and the figure comes out at 5.5 cm. It is a compact piece — the kind that sits well in the hand and stands up without an added base.

01 · ABOUT 42 GRAMS PER CANDLE

Twenty-four sparrows to a kilo of wax

At roughly 42 grams a piece, according to the LYSON catalogue, one kilo of wax gives you around twenty-four sparrows. That is the figure to work a winter batch from without eating into the year's wax.

The maker specifies a 3 × 7 wick, which matches that section. On a rounded figure, an undersized wick burns the bird out from the inside and leaves the silhouette standing, hollow.

02 · POUR THE WAX AT 70-75 °C

And leave the mould alone while it sets

Beeswax melts between 62 and 65 °C, so the comfortable pouring point is 70-75 °C: fluid enough to pick up the plumage, and below the 85 °C at which it starts to darken.

Pour slowly, with the wick already centred and held from above, and from then on the mould stays still. Moving it while the wax sets leaves lines on the surface that will not come out afterwards. The mould has a slit: before pouring, close it with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.
