The 50 °C on the sheet are for soy wax, not for beeswax. And at last the error makes sense: soy melts between 45 and 52 °C and pouring it warm does make sense. Beeswax melts between 62 and 65, so that advice, applied here, tells you to pour something that is solid. It is poured at 70-75.
01 · THE 50 °C ARE FOR SOY
The sheet explained why 50 rather well: it reduces the sink hole and avoids soy frosting. Both are true for soy. For beeswax, 50 °C is not a pouring temperature: it is the solid state.
02 · THE SINK HOLE IS FIXED BY TOPPING UP
The problem it was trying to solve is real: on cooling, wax contracts and leaves a well around the wick. But pouring cold does not fix it, because then it does not copy the relief.
You pour at 70-75 °C, let it set, and when the dip appears you make a second pour to fill it. Two minutes of work and the candle is flat on top.
03 · A CYLINDER WITH A WOVEN TEXTURE
It is a cylinder with a woven relief: the light diffuses in the pattern instead of crossing a smooth wall. And like any relief, it disguises what a smooth surface would give away.
In exchange it traps air: a few firm taps on the sides right after pouring, and unmould cold. It is a two-part mould and the bands go on first; we have them at €1.61.
