01 · WHAT IT IS AND ISN'T

It is not an oxalic acid vaporiser

This is the most common mix-up and it is worth settling before you buy. The Furetto is a fogger for liquid products — vaseline and the like: it heats them as they pass through the coil and pushes them out as fine droplets. Sublimation is a different thing: it means taking solid oxalic acid to around 157 °C so it turns straight into vapour, and that calls for a sublimator, which is a different machine. If sublimating is what you are after, this is not your kit.

02 · HOW IT WORKS

Red-hot coil and a trigger

You screw on a pierceable gas cartridge, fill the tank with liquid and open the gas at the screw valve. The coil is lit with a lighter and you wait for it to come red hot. From then on, every pull of the trigger has the mechanical pump push liquid through the coil: on contact with the glowing metal it comes out as fog. With no electricity and no embers, it can be worked where a traditional smoker would be a risk — in summer, on dry ground, that difference matters.

03 · WHICH VERSION TO CHOOSE

Standard or stainless steel coil

It is the part that takes the punishment: it runs red hot with liquid passing through it. The stainless one stands up better to corrosion, which is what finishes off a coil put away with residue inside. The standard one costs a little less and does the job if you are strict about cleaning after every use. Both are replaceable, so the choice does not tie you down: changing the coil does not mean changing the machine.

04 · MAINTENANCE

Pump before lighting, and grease before storing

Before lighting, pump by hand until liquid comes out steadily. If it does not, do not light it: with the coil blocked, the pressure can split it. At the end of the day, empty the tank and fog with vaseline only to flush out the residue; then close the gas and pump several times so the whole circuit is left coated. And even if you are not using it, run it every few months: what kills these machines is not the work, it is a winter standing idle with a dry circuit.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The gas cartridge is not included and it has to be the pierceable screw-on type. If one day it heats up properly but no fog comes out, the problem is in the liquid circuit — pump or blocked coil — not in the burner: they are different parts and each is replaced separately.
