Portable incubator for 45 cells that runs off the car's 12 V socket and holds queen cells at brood-nest temperature while you travel.
It heats. It does not cool. And it draws on the battery. Two things to be clear about before it goes in the boot: in a car standing in the sun it cannot bring the temperature down, and with the engine off the current comes out of the vehicle's battery. Knowing that, it solves the journey that ruins the most queen cells.
01 · 34-35 °C IS THE BROOD NEST
A capped queen cell finishes its development at brood-nest temperature, which is around 34-35 °C. The IC-03 digital controller works in that region and holds the value with a stated deviation of ±0.3 °C.
What matters is not reaching the figure but not losing it: in the last hours before emergence, a chill in the car is what produces late emergence and poorly formed queens. That is why the case is insulated and foam-lined, and why every cell sits in its own hole.
02 · IT HEATS, BUT IT DOES NOT COOL
Inside there is only a heating element and a control. If the car's cabin reaches 50 °C in the sun, the incubator has no way of getting below that, and above 36 °C queen cells are spoilt just as surely as by cold.
The practical consequence is simple: in the shade, with ventilation, and never parked in the sun with the box inside. In winter the problem is the opposite one and the insulation works in your favour.
03 · 12 V FROM THE SOCKET: DO THE SUM
It is 30 W at 12 V, that is about 2.5 A: any cigarette-lighter socket gives that easily, and the 160 cm cable reaches the back seat.
The detail is the engine. With the engine running, the alternator pays the bill and there is no problem. With the car standing, it is about 30 Wh an hour coming out of the vehicle's battery, and on top of that many cars cut the socket when the ignition is off: the trip has to be planned, not improvised.
04 · 45 CELLS OF Ø 16 × 60 MM
The tray has 45 cavities of Ø 16 × 60 mm, the size of the standard cell protectors on the market (JZ-BZ, Cupkit, Nicot and equivalents).
Having each cell separate and cushioned is not a luxury: on a dirt track what kills queen cells is not the temperature but the jolting. The case damps it and stops them shifting against each other; at 2.1 kg and 27 × 24 × 16.5 cm it fits in any corner of the car.
