01 · THE 10-HDA
2 % declared by the supplier: the figure to compare
10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid exists only in royal jelly; that is why it is used as a marker of authenticity and of good keeping. ISO 12824 sets a minimum of 1.4 %; this jelly is declared at 2 %. It is a figure declared by the supplier, not a batch analysis: it serves to compare two offers by the same yardstick, and the exact value of each batch is that of its analysis.
02 · WHO IT IS FOR
Packers, queen breeders and a household’s whole year
A kilo is about fifty 20 g doses or a hundred 10 g ones to repack, with margin for losses; it is the natural food of the grafted larva in queen rearing; and at home it covers a year of a daily one-gram serving. If you neither repack nor rear queens, one review says it for you: a smaller size may suit you better. Directions are set by the label.
03 · COLD FROM START TO FINISH
Fridge at 2-8 °C, never the freezer, and it ships Monday to Wednesday only
It ships only Monday to Wednesday, refrigerated, in a polystyrene box with gel packs sized for 24 to 36 hours below 12 °C: a Thursday order leaves on Monday, so it never sleeps the weekend in a warehouse. On arrival, straight into the fridge, between 2 and 8 °C, and never frozen: freezing breaks its proteins and thawing does not bring them back. Out of the fridge, 24 hours at most; the best-before date is on the tub.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
1 kg wide-mouth tub: take the dose out with a clean spatula and close it again; light and heat are its two enemies.
