Cold uncapping Knife with smooth cutting blade on both sides. Made of 420 stainless steel with 1.5mm blades and flat handle in natural kotibe wood. Made in Spain. The blade is 24cm long, ideal for Layens frames.
The length of an uncapping knife is not a matter of taste: it is set by the frame you pull out of the super.
Uncapping knife with a smooth edge on both sides, 420 stainless steel blade 1.5 mm thick and a flat kotibé wood handle. The 24 cm is the length this shop recommends for Layens.
01 · WHY 24 CM
The Layens frame is a deep one, and with a short blade you end up uncapping in fits and starts, hand down in the tray. There are three lengths in the range for exactly that reason: 21 cm for shallow supers and Langstroth, 24 cm — this one — for Layens, and 28 cm for the Dadant brood chamber.
Choose by the frame, not by the price: a blade that falls short is far more tiring than a few extra centimetres.
02 · SMOOTH OR SERRATED
A smooth edge cuts new wax in one clean pass, without tearing it and without dragging lumps of comb along. That is its ground and also its limit: once the capping is dark and the comb has carried several rounds of brood, the smooth edge skates over it instead of biting. For that wax there is the serrated knife, which exists in the same 24 cm length.
Plenty of beekeepers end up owning both and choosing by the frame rather than by habit.
03 · HOW IT IS WORKED
It is not a razor-sharp kitchen knife: it cuts by edge and heat together. The old method is a container of hot water and two knives taking turns, one cutting while the other warms up. The wax sticks less and the cut comes out cleaner than forcing it with a cold blade.
It has an edge on both sides, so it works the same in either direction, and 420 steel takes a pass on the stone well when it loses its edge.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
This is the long one in the smooth-edge range:
| ✓ FITS | Light, recent wax on Layens frames, uncapping by hand. |
| ✕ DOESN'T FIT | Old dark comb full of cocoons: there the serrated one bites. |
| ⚠ NOT INCLUDED | No tray or uncapping bench. And it does not come razor-sharp: it is warmed in water. |
