Ambrosia in a bag of 2.5 kg is an energy paste ready for use in the hive. Its structure combines very fine sugar crystals with a film of dissolved sugars, ensuring it retains a paste-like texture and eliminating the need to prepare syrup at every visit. It is designed to address occasional energy deficits, not for routine feeding or to compensate for a lack of pollen.
The label lists sucrose, glucose syrup and invert sugar syrup, with total sugars expressed as sucrose at 84%. It also lists 0% crude protein, fibre, fat and ash. Its function is therefore to provide readily available carbohydrates; if pollen or protein is lacking, this deficit must be assessed separately.
It is suitable as a maintenance or emergency feed, during a break in flowering, in colonies with limited reserves, or when cold weather makes liquid syrup inadvisable. Before introducing it, check the colony’s strength, reserves, nectar and pollen intake, health status and the weather forecast. The fact that a colony consumes the paste does not in itself prove that the nutritional problem has been resolved.
Cut a feeding opening in the wrapper and place the bag over the frame top bars, with the opening accessible to the bees and as close as possible to the occupied area. In cold conditions, a paste placed in a corner that the cluster cannot reach is of little use. Check consumption: if it remains untouched, investigate the cause before adding more feed.
Do not provide feed paste when the bees may store it alongside honey intended for sale. Use it outside commercial harvest periods or ensure that feed and honey are clearly separated. It is also no substitute for varroa control, queen inspection or rectifying a hive that is too weak.
Store the bags in a cool, dry place at a stable temperature. Once the packet has been opened, use the remainder promptly and keep it sealed to protect against moisture, dirt and pests. Do not expose the paste to repeated heating.
