Details of Silicone Mould – Holy Family

Silicone mould with the figure of the Holy Family. The piece comes out 7 cm tall by 4 cm across and around 35 g of wax.

The maker's sheet says pour at 60 °C, and at 60 °C beeswax is not liquid. That is the figure to correct before the mould is first used.

01 · AT 60 °C THE WAX IS NOT LIQUID

The melting point is between 62 and 65

Beeswax melts between 62 and 65 °C. At 60 it is still a paste: it does not flow, it does not reach the detail, and the figure comes out with a broken surface. For beeswax the pour is between 70 and 75 °C. With soy or paraffin the temperatures really are lower, and that is probably where the 60 comes from.

02 · 35 GRAMS, 28 PIECES PER KILO

A figure format, not a table candle

The figure is 7 cm tall by 4 cm across and takes around 35 g of wax: four tenths of the cylinder that contains it. A kilo gives some 28 pieces. The mould itself is 9.5 × 5.5 cm and also serves for soap, resin or plaster.

03 · THE SPRAY IS NOT NEEDED FOR WAX

Silicone releases it on its own

With wax you need no release agent: silicone lets it go by itself, and a spray on a fine relief leaves a film and blurs the detail. Release agent has its place with plaster and resin, which do grip. For wax, a centred wick held with a stick is all the preparation it asks.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Neither wax nor wick is included, and a mould is dedicated to one material: no alternating with food.
