Details of Candle Mould – Balthazar

Two-part silicone mould for a Balthazar figure in beeswax, with the robes and the offering casket in relief.

At 50 °C beeswax is not poured: it is solid. The supplier's sheet says to pour between 50 and 60 °C. Beeswax melts between 62 and 65: at 50 it is solid and there is nothing to pour. It is poured at 70-75, and the ceiling above is not shrinkage: it is the 85 °C at which wax darkens.

01 · AT 50 °C WAX IS SOLID

And the reason the sheet gave was not the right one either

The sheet justified it by saying that «if it is too hot, the figure may shrink too much». Wax shrinks on cooling in any case; what limits it from above is darkening beyond 85 °C. Between 70 and 75 it reaches the bottom liquid and copies the whole relief.

02 · GASPAR IS NOT IN OUR RANGE

Worth knowing before you start the nativity

We have Balthazar and Melchior (€23.10), but not the third king. If the whole scene is the plan, tell us and we will ask the supplier before you build two thirds of a nativity.

03 · THE NECK IS THE WEAK POINT

And the casket is where the air stays

It is a two-part mould: close it with elastic bands before pouring or the wax escapes at the seam — we have them at €1.61. Pour slowly and tap the base: the hollow between the hands and the casket traps air.

When unmoulding, never pull on the head. Open the mould wide and push the figure from below: the base is broad, but the neck is where it snaps.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

70-75 °C, bands on, and no Gaspar.

✓ A GOOD FITA nativity figure from your own wax: robes and casket in relief, in reusable silicone.
⚠ IT NEEDS ELASTIC BANDSTwo-part mould: unheld, the wax escapes at the seam. We have them at €1.61.
✕ YOU CANNOT COMPLETE THE THREE KINGSWe have Balthazar and Melchior. Gaspar is not in our range; ask us if you need him.
