Mould of the Easter bunny in the egg, with a side cut: 46 grams of wax a candle, about 21 to the kilo.

The side cut is what sets this mould apart. It is not a finishing detail: it is what lets you centre the wick before pouring and then take the figure out without forcing the ears, which is where a piece like this breaks.

01 · 46 GRAMS AND A SIDE CUT

It opens to set the wick and to unmould

At 46 grams a candle, a kilo of wax gives about 21 pieces of 8 cm tall and 4.4 across. The wick that section asks for is the 3 × 9, and it is not included.

You open the cut, set the wick centred and held from above, and close it to pour. To unmould you open it again instead of pulling on the candle: on a figure with fine relief, pulling is exactly what chips it. Before pouring, the cut is closed with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.

02 · 70-75 °C, NOT 65

The temperature these moulds usually get wrong

Beeswax melts between 62 and 65 °C, so pouring at 65 is working right on the edge: the wax runs thick and does not reach into the relief. The comfortable point is between 70 and 75 °C, and the ceiling is the 85 above which wax darkens.

With the wick vertical and the mould still, the piece cools on its own. Only when it is completely cold do you open the cut.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY
