Honey skimmer for removing the foam layer that remains on the surface after honey has settled in a bucket, drum or settling tank. Its broad, curved blade gathers that layer in a controlled sweep so it can be kept separate from the batch before filling.

The official item has a 1 mm stainless-steel sheet, a plastic handle and a published overall size of approximately 23 × 10 cm. This is a surface tool: it covers a broad strip without stirring the body of honey, but it is not designed to reach the bottom of a deep tank.

01 · AFTER SETTLING

Skim only after the layer has risen and stopped moving

During settling, air bubbles, light pieces of wax and other light debris from extraction rise and form a visible surface layer. Keep the vessel covered and allow this layer to stabilise before using the tool. Colder or more viscous honey may need longer than warm, fluid honey; skimming too early can disperse air and particles again. The scraper acts only on material that has reached the top. It is the previous settling period, not the blade itself, that makes this separation possible.

02 · WORKING METHOD

A shallow continuous sweep avoids mixing the layer back in

Hold the blade nearly flat at one edge, move it across the surface without plunging it into the honey and guide the foam to one collection point. Lift the material out and let it drain in a separate container; do not return it to the batch. Repeat only where a visible layer remains and avoid short churning movements. When filling through a bottom valve, leave both the top layer and any sediment at the base undisturbed. The curved 1 mm sheet provides the scraping geometry; it does not behave like a flexible silicone spatula.

03 · HYGIENE AND CARE

Clean, dry and inspect the tool before storage

Remove honey immediately after use and hand-wash with warm potable water and a detergent suitable for food utensils. Rinse, dry fully and inspect the edge, handle joint and any burr or distortion before the next season. The stainless-steel grade, dishwasher suitability and compatibility with specific disinfectants have not been documented, so do not assume unlisted cycles, temperatures or chemicals are acceptable. Store the skimmer clean, dry and protected from impacts that could damage its broad edge.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Check the vessel opening and do not confuse skimming with filtration

The approximately 23 × 10 cm tool must fit through the opening and have room to move across the surface. Its short handle gives close control, but limited reach in tall or narrow-necked tanks. Removing foam improves presentation before filling; it does not remove moisture, chemical residues or all pollen, purify honey or replace a filter. If foam returns with gas, pressure or a sour smell, check moisture and process conditions: scraping away the layer does not correct possible fermentation.
